MIDTERM REVIEW

Using depth of field for storytelling

Video

Techniques you can use to achieve shallow depth-of-field (profunditat de camp) when shooting video.

2 primary factors we can manipulate to achieve a more shallow depth-of-field: focal length and aperture.

Focal length

The longer the lents, the more shallow the depth of field you can achieve. 85 mm. If you add zoom, even more sense of depth. Behind and in front of your subject will be soft and cinematic.

The wider the shot, the farther the camera will have to be from your subject.

Aperture

If you open your lens aperture to a low f-stop such as f/4 you can get dramatic DOF overshooting at higher f-stop such as f11 or f-16.

The more you open your iris, the more the background will go out of focus.

Proximity to camera

Place your subject as far from the background as possible. The closer the camera is to your subject the more shallow depth of field. The more distance between the things in your frame - more dramatic.

Big imaging sensors

The bigger the sensor, the better the image, the greater the shallow DOF. Thats because with a larger sensor we get a larger field of view

REVIEW - Factors that contribute a shallow DOF

  • Large sensor size

  • Longer lens

  • Open aperture

  • Distance to camera

  • Distance between subjects
